Keynote address at the Detlef Schrempf Foundation Gala and Auction, July, 2014

Abigail Carter, Speaker

I have spoken about both grief and loss, and about writing and publishing and have conducted readings of my books on several occasions for organizations such as the ALS Chapter of Vancouver, Bereaved Families of Ontario, Soaring Spirits Loss Foundation's Camp Widow, Recovery Cafe, Seattle and The University of Washington Extension Memoir Certificate Program. I speak at book clubs and have moderated panels of speakers and, on behalf of The Healing Center, Seattle, was the keynote speaker at the Detlef Schrempf Foundation Gala Auction in 2014.

Topics

Writing After Loss

This interactive workshop encourages people who are new to writing to tap into memories and free-write some of their experience as a form of healing. This workshop has been taught as a 45 min session or can be extended to a 2 hour one.

Coping with the Anger of Widowhood

Directed mostly at widowed people, this workshop offers practical ways of dealing with the difficult emotions that arise after a loss and offers a message of hopefulness during stressful moments.

Using Creativity to Heal From Loss

Tapping into one’s natural inclination to find creative outlets to heal from grief, this workshop gets people painting as a way of discovering their own inherent creativity, be it writing, painting or even scarf tying. The goal of this workshop is to allow people to recognize their individual talents and use them as a outlet towards finding a new normal.

The Ins and Outs of Self Publishing a Book

With a career in spanning an array of publishing ventures, from formatting books in-house at Routledge Publishing in London in 1994, to becoming a web director at Audible.com and founding the startup, Writer.ly, and publishing numerous books for a variety of clients, I know a lot about what it takes to publish a book on your own. I tell my own story from the perspective of both publishing a book through a traditional large publishing company and publishing a book on my own to provide insight to those seeking to get their work into the world.

Book Clubs

I am always happy to speak to book clubs about either of my books, either in person or via Zoom.
